A big part of the cruise experience is enjoying your time ashore, discovering and learning more about the destinations and the ports of call. During my time at the wharf welcoming passengers to Iceland and dispatching the tours (and often guiding them), I have enjoyed many conversations with cruise passengers who have often told me that the cruise itinerary and ports of call played a major part in their cruise vacation choice. Cruise lines and their appointed tour operators do their utmost to bring destinations to life through interesting and safe shore excursion offerings. Read on for my top tips in getting the most out of your shore excursions and enjoying your precious time ashore.
There are a few exciting dates listed in my calendar for the coming month. One is a trip to Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on February 13th to watch Wales take on Scotland in the ‘6 Nations’ rugby. For your info, I shall be attending the match in full traditional Welsh costume and yes, photos and up-dates will be shared via social media, so please do follow me! Another very important date in my diary is February 18th, when I am to proudly represent Iceland Travel at the inaugural cruise Wave Awards. We have been names as finalists in no less than two categories. And last but not least, February also hails the imminent arrival of a new family member.
Nail biting stuff! I look forward to keeping you posted.
Welcome to the first in a series of posts on my recent trip to Havana. Tonight the shore excursion spotlight falls on the legendary Tropicana nightclub. A flamboyant, 1950s-style kitsch extravaganza that does exactly what is says on the tin and delivers a fantastic, fun night out. The show is a non-stop singing and dancing bonanza, awash with quivering tail feathers, sparkling sequins and precariously placed ginormous headdresses. Read on to hear about my night out at Havana’s legendary Topicana, located somewhere fabulous, between fantasy and fiction.
Having lived in Iceland for the past 18 years, I am ashamed to say that my Icelandic is, in a word, atrocious. But still I battle on with the unfathomable grammar, unpronounceable pronunciation and the “impossible to learn unless you were born here” verb inflections. Moving backwards rather than forwards in most parts and still mixing up my genders. But before you judge me, I ask you this. Do you think the Icelandic word for bra is feminine or masculine? The answer is masculine. I rest my case…
A big part of the cruise experience is exploring the fantastic ports of call that your ship is destined to visit. In the past, shore excursions were almost always operated via the cruise lines, however today, thanks to the ease and access of the World Wide Web, many passengers are opting to purchase their tours independently. The debate continues as to which option is actually best – cruise line or on-line. Should passengers be genuinely concerned about purchasing tours from an on-line tour operator? Or are cruise lines forcing their guests in this direction by charging too much? Read on and judge for yourself.
